CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Shipping in Cardiganshire was mainly centred on the port of Aberystwyth. The port was responsible for the registration of shipping and the collection of duties on imports. Ceredigion Archives has accumulated various groups of records relating to the port and its activities. General registration of ships began in the 18th century, when all ships with a deck and burden of more than 15 tons had to be registered with the Customs and excise at their homeport. Many ships were registered in the port of Aberustwyth, that encompassed all the smaller ports in Cardiganshire north of Newport, Pembrokeshire, and in the southern part of Merionethshire. Aberystwyth became a trading port of some importance from the late 18th century onwards, with imports such as coal, limestone and foodstuffs and exports including lead ore, slates and fish. The port of Aberystwyth gradually declined over the second half of the 19th century and ceased exporting material in the early 20th century.
