CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Mathias family had resided in Llangwarren, Pembrokeshire, since the 16th century, when Thomas Mathias (d. 1617) married Jane Lloyd, daughter and co-heiress of Llangwarren. The estate descended in the male line, eventually passing to Charles Delamotte Mathias (1777-1851) on the death of his uncle, Lewis Mathias without issue. Charles Mathias purchased Lamphey Court, Lamphey, in 1810-1811, and began building a new mansion there in 1823. Charles married Mary, eldest daughter of John Bethell, of Hassage, Somerset. The family advertised Llangwarren for sale in 1987 and Lamphey Court in 1978. Alyne Louisa Eliza Hulton married James Mathias, the 7th son of Charles Delamotte Mathias. Subsequently, Elinor Amy Lloyd Mathias, niece of James Mathias (1823-1886), married Burnet George Rind of Allenbrook, Dale, Pembrokeshire. According to the 1873 return of owners of land Lewis Mathias of Lamphey Court owned 4,562 acres (all in Pembrokeshire) with an estimated rental of £4,113.
