CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Department of the Lord Chancellor is responsible for the organisation of the courts system and the control of appointments to the judiciary. The commission areas are sub-divided into petty sessions areas (or magistrates' courts). As well as handling criminal cases, they have a role in civil jurisdiction, including family law, care proceedings, and the licensing of public houses, off-licences, and betting and gaming establishments.
