CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Great Britain's Board of Trade originated as a committee of inquiry in the 17th century; it evolved into a government department with various functions, including monitoring of merchant shipping, mines and factories and the promotion of industrial and economic development. The department became part of the Department of Trade and Industry in 1970. In the course of its work, it accumulated maps and plans relating to proposed developments in coastal areas, nautical charts, and other documents relating to shipping.
