CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Crawshay family of Trefforest, Glamorgan, were descendants of the Crawshay family of Cyfarthfa, Merthyr Tydfil. Francis Crawshay (1811-1878) of Trefforest and Bradbourne Hall, Riverhead, Kent, was the second son of the ironmaster William Crawshay (1788-1867) of Cyfarthfa Castle. Francis's fourth son, Tudor Crawshay of Forest House, Glamorgan, was sheriff of the county in 1887. Tudor's son, Owen Tudor Richard Crawshay (b. 1878), married Barbra Mary Nicholl-Carne, daughter of John Devereux Vann Loder Nicholl-Carne of Nash Manor and Dimlands, Glamorgan, in 1926.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Deeds and estate papers of Trefforest and Bonvilston House estates, mainly in Glamorgan and Brecknockshire, 1723-1966, and London and Kent, 1914-1939; papers relating to the sale of Crawshay and Trefforest estates, 1919-1920; and family papers mainly comprising family photographs and diaries, 1865-1997; Crawshay and Carne family papers, 1775-1984; and printed material, 1784-1850.
