CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: George Gibbon, living in 1609, is noted as residing in Trecastle, otherwise Tre'rcastell, Llanharry, Glamorgan, also known as Scurla Castle. His great-grandson, Thomas Gibbon (d 1699) died without issue, so that the estate passed to his wife, Jenet, daughter of Griffith Grant of Wilton. She bequeathed the estate to her great-nephew, Grant Gibbon (d 1771), son of William Gibbon of Pencraigadda, Glamorgan. Grant Gibbon married secondly, Catherine Deere. The estate descended in the male line until William Gibbon (d 1764), whose daughter Elizabeth, co-heiress of the estate, married Thomas Williams (d 1839), son of Morgan Williams of Pendoylan, Glamorgan. Thomas's brother, Morgan Williams (d 1815), married Frances Llewellin of Cowbridge, while his sister, Elizabeth, married Edward Llewellin. Thomas and Elizabeth's daughter and heiress was Elizabeth, who married John Samuel (1777-1845) of Bonvilston. Their son and heir, John Samuel (1826-1893), assumed by royal licence the additional surname of Gibbon in 1863.
