Administrative/Biographical history: The Stradling-Carne family of St Donats Castle, Glamorgan, was a branch of the Nicholl family of The Ham, Glamorgan. The Rev. Robert Nicholl Carne (1763-1849) of Dimlands and St Donats, which was acquired by the family by purchase, was the sixth son of Whitlock Nicholl of The Ham. The Rev. Robert married Elizabeth Carne, heiress of Nash. He assumed the additional surname of Carne by royal licence in 1842. Elizabeth was a direct descendant of Richard Carne, brother of Sir Edward Carne (d. 1561), ancestor of the Carnes of Ewenny. Robert's second son, John Whitlock Stradling-Carne (1817-1889), succeeded to the Dimlands, Nash manor and St Donats estates and assumed the surname of Stradling-Carne in lieu of Nicholl-Carne in 1877. His first son, Edward Stradling Nicholl, died without issue in 1869. His second son and heir was John Devereux Vann Loder Nicholls-Carne (1854-1905), of St Donats Castle, Nash Manor, and Dimlands, who sold the St Donats estate. According to the 1873 return of owners of land, John Whitlock Nicholl-Carne, of St Donats Castle and Nash Manor owned 3,217 acres, all in Glamorgan, with an annual rental of £4,495 rental.
