Administrative/Biographical history: Violet Marie Kathleen John (née Cashin) was born in Ballyconnell, County Cavan, Ireland, in 1937. She moved to Wales in 1967, and married Adrian John in Maesteg, Glamorgan, in 1975. During the Miner's Strike of 1984-1985, she became very active in campaigning and helping to raise funds and food supplies for the relief of the local mining community. After the strike had ended, she became involved in the subsequent campaign to prevent colliery closures. Some of the groups in which she was active included South Wales Women's Support Groups, Garth Action Group, and Llynfi Valley Anti-Opencast Campaigners.
