Administrative/Biographical history: Cowbridge Rural District Council (Glamorgan) was established in 1894, replacing the Cowbridge Division of the Bridgend and Cowbridge Rural Sanitary Authority, and covering the approximate area of the old Cowbridge hundred. It held its first meeting on 1 October 1895. Initially, the Council held responsibility for sanitation, roads and rating. Housing was later added to its remit. In 1920, it became a constituent authority of the Mid Glamorgan Water Board. During both World Wars, the council also assumed responsibility for food and fuel control, reception of evacuees, and air raid precautions. A grant of arms and chains of office were provided for the Council in 1957, as the result of public subscription. Cowbridge Rural District Council was abolished in 1974, under the terms of the Local Government Act 1972. Its powers, for the majority of the area it covered, were transferred to the newly established Vale of Glamorgan Borough Council, whilst the parishes of Llanharan, Llanharry, Llanilid and Peterston-super-Montem became part of Taff Ely Borough Council.
