Elections were held on December 17th that year, and the Council met for the first time on January 11th 1895. The Council covered the area of the parishes of Llantrisant and Llantwit Fardre, and was one of the largest authorities of its kind in Britain, covering 18,433 acres. It was responsible for: housing; recreational facilities; sanitation; lighting; and roads. In 1972 a public enquiry was held into propsoals to develop Llantrisant as a New Town. Llantrisant and Llantwit Fardre Rural District Council ceased to exist in 1974, under the terms of the Local Government Act 1972, and its responsibilities were transferred to the newly-established Taff Ely Borough Council (1974-1996), subsequently to Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council.
