Administrative/Biographical history: Aberdare Urban District Council (Glamorgan) was formed in 1894, following the Local Government of England and Wales Act. It took over the functions of Aberdare Local Board of Health. The Council's area of responsibility was the parish of Aberdare, Glamorgan. The Urban District Council ceased to exist on 31 March 1974, and was merged with Mountain Ash and parts of Neath Rural District Council and Vaynor and Penderyn Rural District Council to form Cynon Valley Borough Council.


Scope and content/abstract: Records of the Aberdare Urban District Council, 1894-1974, includes: council and committee minutes, 1895-1974 (with gaps); attendance registers, 1926-1971 (with gaps); notices of motions, 1903-1939; acceptance of office, 1894-1973; disclosures and general notices, 1933, 1934, 1937, and 1950; officers' reports, 1928-1974; lists of members, 1951-1962; seal registers, 1968-1973; title deeds and miscellaneous legal papers, 1854-1931; printed bye-laws, 1894-1965; printed notices, 1878-1949; parliamentary papers, 1866-1974; medical officer of health newscuttings, 1948-1956; plans, 1873; abstracts of accounts, 1923-1946; education committee minutes, 1898-1938; correspondence and accounts, 1876-1937; and school attendance records and records relating to school premises, 1892-1949.

Conditions governing access: Some of these records are stored in an outside repository. They should be ordered at least a week in advance of an intended visit so that they can be brought into the Record Office for consultation in the search room. Items containing information on named individuals may be restricted in accordance with the Data Protection Act and Record Office policy.
