The Rhigos part of the Rural District was transferred to Neath Rural District Council in 1908. The Urban District Council's area of responsibility corresponded with the civil parish of Gelligaer (Glamorgan). The Urban District Council ceased to exist on 31 March 1974. The majority was merged with Caerphilly Urban District Council, Bedwas and Machen Urban District Council and Rhymney Urban District Council to form Rhymney Valley District Council. The remainder with part of Vaynor and Penderyn Rural District Council and Merthyr Tydfil Borough Council formed Merthyr Tydfil District Council.
