Administrative/Biographical history: Bethany Baptist church, in St Mary Street, Cardiff, Glamorgan, was established on 7 September 1806, and is the oldest English Baptist church in Cardiff. The first pastor, Thomas Lewis, was appointed in 1809. A Sunday School was founded in 1813, and in 1821, a new chapel was opened. By 1827, membership had risen to 96, and new galleries were opened in 1827. The first meeting of the Carmarthen and Glamorgan English Baptist Association took place at Bethany Baptist church in 1857. In 1861, membership rose to 465 and a new building was opened in 1865. By 1916, the proliferation of English Baptist churches, often under the auspices of Bethany itself, throughout Cardiff and Penarth had led to a gradual decline in membership. The church eventually followed the movement of population by transferring the chapel to Rhiwbina. The last service was held in the St Mary Street building in November 1963, and the first service in the new building in September 1964.
