Administrative/Biographical history: This collection represents the business records of several property companies set up in Cardiff and the surrounding area towards the end of the nineteenth century. A prominent figure in the activities of each of these companies was Frederick de Courcy Hamilton (1856-1940), a solicitor who had opened a practice in Cardiff in the 1870s. By the 1880s, he had founded, and frequently acted as Secretary and Director of, Cardiff Exchange and Office Co. Ltd and Glamorganshire Workmen's Cottage Co. Ltd, whilst holding substantial interests in Cardiff High Street Arcade Co. Ltd, Whitefield Estate Co. Ltd, and Weston Hill Estate Co. Ltd. He continued to play an active part in these and other companies until his death on 27 March 1940. Cardiff High Street Arcade Co. Ltd remained active into the 1970s, and accumulated many records of the other companies.
