Administrative/Biographical history: Cardiff Medical Society was established in 1871 in Cardiff, Glamorgan, to encourage the advancement of medical knowledge, and to promote the welfare of the medical profession. Dr Thomas Evans, the senior medical practitioner in Cardiff, was elected president, and William Thomas Edwards (1821-1915), the senior medical officer at Cardiff Infirmary, was elected vice-president of the society for that year. In the early years of its existence, the society struggled to survive, and recruitment of new members was slow. Membership of the society now (2004) consists of more than 350 medical practitioners in Cardiff and surrounding district. The society holds monthly meetings during the academic year and invites prominent speakers from the UK.
