Administrative/Biographical history: Under the Transport Act 1947, British ports and most other major transport operations became part of the state-owned British Transport Commission (BTC). However, due to financial difficulties, the BTC was abolished under the Transport Act 1962, and five new public authorities were established, one of which was the British Transport Docks Board (BTDB). The ports of Barry, Cardiff, Swansea, Port Talbot and Penarth, in Glamorgan, fell under the jurisdiction of the BTDB, which accumulated a group of maps and plans relating to Cardiff and Penarth. BTDB was heavily dependent on government subsidies, and capital investment was limited, resulting in very poor productivity. In the 1980s, the govwernment decided to create a new company, Associated British Ports (ABP), which took over the assets of the British Transport Docks Board, including the ports of Cardiff and Port Talbot. ABP was privatised in April 1983.
