Administrative/Biographical history: In the 18th century, Thomas Wyndham (d 1751) of Clearwell Court, in the Forest of Dean, Gloucestershire, married Anne (d 1758), daughter and heiress of Samuel Edwin of Llanmihangel, near Cowbridge, Glamorgan. Thomas and Anne Wyndham had a son, Charles Wyndham (d 1801). Charles assumed the name of Edwin in accordance with his uncle's will, but soon reverted to Wyndham. He married Eleanor Rooke of Bigswear, and had one son, Thomas, who succeeded to Dunraven and Clearwell on his father's death in 1801. In 1778, Charles Wyndham, commissioned the Margam surveyor, Edward Thomas (fl. 1773-1797) to survey the entire Dunraven and Llanmihangel estates, including lands in Coity and Gower, an area which covered over 24,000 acres. The survey took six years to compile, and was presented to the owner in 1787.
