Administrative/Biographical history: Barry Garden Suburb is a housing area on the western periphery of Barry (Glamorgan), on a high plateau overlooking the beach of Cold Knap, and the Bristol Channel. The large-scale development of the area was begun in 1915, by Barry Garden Suburb Ltd, a public utility housing society established with the support of the Welsh Town Planning and Housing Trust Ltd, registered under the Industrial and Provident Societies Acts 1914. The main objective of the society was the provision of modern houses in pleasant and healthy surroundings. The society was managed by a committee, elected by its members. Prospective members (not necessarily tenants) were admitted on the condition that each should hold at least one £1 share in the society. Applications for tenancy were accepted from members who held a minimum share of £50. The first section of the society's development, comprising 52 houses, was undertaken in 1915. A further 52 houses were built in 1922, and 108 semi-detached dwellings in 1925. Each house was supplied with water, gas for cooking and lighting, a boiler, a water storage tank and a dustbin. Fences and hedges were erected and paths were laid. The houses were sold in 1969, and the Barry Garden Suburb Ltd was dissolved in 1974.
