CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society was founded in 1937, as a special choir to supplement the Llandaff cathedral choir in the performance of large-scale works on special occasions. It now has individual status, and is one of the longest established choirs in Wales. The founder, and first conductor, of the Society was Dr W. H. Gabb. He later became sub-organist at St Paul's Cathedral, London, and later Organist, Choirmaster and Composer of Her Majesty's Chapels Royal. The longest-serving conductors following Dr Gabb were Robert Joyce (1958-1974), and Dr Michael Smith (1974-1991).

Scope and content/abstract: Records of the Llandaff Cathedral Choral Society, 1938-1981, including: minute books, 1938-1976; account books, 1969-1979; correspondence to and from members of the Society concerning performances and rehearsals, 1959-1979; details of membership of the choir and the society, 1959-1969, 1977-1978; programme for performances given by the choir, 1950-1969; bulletins of the National Federation of Music Societies, 1957-1974; and newsletters of the National Federation of Music Societies.
