CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Ann Clwyd (b 1937), was elected as MP for the Cynon Valley (Labour) in 1984 and became the first woman to represent a South Wales Valleys' seat. She is currently a Member of the House of Commons Select Committee on International Development, Chairman of the All-Party Group on Human Rights, and Joint Vice Chair on Portugal. The papers in this collection relate to her activities as a Member of the European Party for Mid and West Wales, during the 1980s.

CONTENT

Scope and content/abstract: Papers of Ann Clwyd, 1964-1987, comprised of: letters despatched, 1980-1984, 1986. Constituency correspondence, 1984-1987. Correspondence and papers, 1964-1987, includes correspondence relating to Mrs Edwina Currie, 1985 and 1986; correspondence relating to the European Economic Community, 1978-1985; correspondence and papers relating to health and the National Health Service, 1979-1987; correspondence relating to transport in Wales, 1984-1986; correspondence and papers relating to the Warnock Report (which is concerned with reproduction and the implications of test-tube babies, surrogate motherhood, and experiments with embryos) 1984-1986; miscellaneous correspondence and papers 1980-1987 - subjects include: coal; deportation; education; library services; Nigerian water supply; street lighting; and the Turkish peace movement.
