CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: St John Ambulance Association was founded in 1877, in order to provide treatment to those who suffered accidents during the 19th century. The organisation ran classes on First Aid, published books and other material and set examinations for First Aid certificates. Before long, thousands of people had received their First Aid Certificates, many of whom wanted to use their training to help the public. At first they grouped together and called themselves the Ambulance Corps. In 1887, the St John Ambulance Brigade was formed, the aim of which was to provide a service of First Aid and ambulance transport at public events. The St John Ambulance Brigade in Wales is now a voluntary organisation which relies on the public and the local business community for its funding and in return, provides the service for which it is famous. The Cefn Cribbwr Ambulance Division, Cefn Cribbwr, Glamorgan, has been active since 1913, and in 18970 a team from the Division took place in the national Grand Prior's Trophy competition.
