Administrative/Biographical history: During the 1880s, amateur and professional artists in Cardiff, Glamorgan, met occasionally in each other's homes for discussion and the practice of painting. In 1887, they decided to form a society and, after canvassing for support, a public meeting was held on 2nd February 1888, to launch the venture under the name 'South Wales Art Society and Sketching Club', later South Wales Art Society. The first exhibition was a great success. In the early 20th century, the society had its own art gallery; later, the National Museum of Wales placed the Turner House Art gallery, Penarth, Glamorgan, at the Society's disposal for the Annual Exhibition. More recently, the exhibition has been held at other locations in Cardiff. A variety of prizes are awarded ranging from media to subject. The overall winner receives the Anthony Rapport Trophy. The Society remains active.
