Administrative/Biographical history: The South Wales Leaseholders Association was formed on March 1985. Its stated objectives were: (i) to co-ordinate the activities of leaseholders in their aims for a fair price for freeholds and a proper relationship with the freeholder; (ii) To secure changes in the Leasehold Reform Act 1967 to protect leaseholders from exploitation; (iii) to advise members in matters relating to leasehold legislation and finance; and (iv) to disseminate relevant information through the media. The activities of the association are reflected in its records, including enquiries made by individuals on problems relating to leasehold tenure, and the Association's campaign for leasehold reform. The Leasehold Reform Act 1967 had given leaseholders the right to purchase the freeholds to their properties, under certain conditions. The Association wanted a fixed formula established for the pricing of freeholds. It also pressed for changes which would not tie leaseholders to the insurance fees insisted upon by ground landlords. The Association conducted surveys of building developers, estate agents, and Members of Parliament to discover their views on leasehold tenure and reform. The South Wales Leaseholders Association was dissolved in July 1990. It was decided that the Association's objectives could not be achieved without much stronger support.
