Administrative/Biographical history: The Townswomen's Guilds were founded in 1928, as a response to the introduction of equal suffrage of men and women through the Representation of the People Act 1928. The express aim of the organisation was to educate women to be citizens, and to serve as a meeting ground for women for educational and social purposes. Its structure was based on that of the Women's Institutes, with a National Federative body co-ordinating a series of local branches, the first of which was founded in January 1929. The Barry Cadoxton Evening Townwomen's Guild was founded in 1961 in Barry, Glamorgan. It was affilated to the National Union of Townswomen' Guilds and with Cardiff East Glamorgan Federation.
