Administrative/Biographical history: The Taff and Ely Rod Fishing Association (Glamorgan) was formed in c. 1875 in order to keep the Rivers Taff and Ely free from pollution and to foster trout-fishing. Ultimately, both rivers became heavily polluted by the local iron, coal and steel industries, and, as a consequence, the Taff and Ely Rod Fishing Association was dissolved in 1971. However, by the early 1980s there has been major improvements in the water quality due to economic recession and improved pollution control; and sea trout and some salmon are again entering lower reaches of river.
