Administrative/Biographical history: The Victorian Society is the national society responsible for the study and protection of Victorian and Edwardian architecture and other arts. It was founded in 1958, to protect Victorian buildings of special architectural or historic interest and to organise social and academic events in order to increase the level of awareness and appreciation of the Victorian era. Among its founder members were Sir John Betjeman and Nikolaus Pevsner. The South Wales Group of the Victorian Society was formed in 1974, to co-ordinate the work of the society in the South Wales area. The Group issues a newsletter and holds lectures, and corresponds with planning bodies concerning buildings at risk.
