CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Mid Glamorgan County Council was established in 1974 under the terms of the Local Government Act 1972. Its Shadow Authority came into operation in 1973. The aim of the Local Government Act 1972 was to simplify local government by creating a two tier system of county councils and district councils. The former Glamorgan County Council was divided into three new counties: West Glamorgan, South Glamorgan, and Mid Glamorgan, extending from Bridgend in the west to Rhymney Valley in the east. Mid Glamorgan covered five district councils, Ogwr (later re-named Bridgend) District Council; Taff Ely Borough Council; Cynon Valley Borough Council; Rhondda (District) Borough Council and Rhymney Valley District Council. Mid Glamorgan County Council ceased to exist with the passing of the Local Government Act 1996. This saw the county divided into four new unitary authorities: Rhondda Cynon Taff County Borough Council; Merthyr Tydfil County Borough Council; Caerphilly County Borough Council; and Bridgend County Borough Council.
