In 1974, Mid Glamorgan County Council was established when the historic county of Glamorgan, was split into three new counties - South, West and Mid Glamorgan Below these new county councils was a second tier of government at the district council level. In Mid Glamorgan these consisted of Ogwr, Rhondda, Cynon Valley, Rhymney valley, Merthyr Tydfil, and Taff-Ely district councils.
