Administrative/Biographical history: In 1974, Mid Glamorgan County Council was established when the historic county of Glamorgan was split into three new counties - South, West and Mid Glamorgan. Under these new county councils was a second tier of government known as district councils (though most had the title of 'borough council'). In Mid Glamorgan, this layer of government consisted of Ogwr, Rhondda, Cynon Valley, Merthyr Tydfil and Taff-Ely borough councils and Rhymney Valley district council. Their responsibilities included housing, planning and development, environmental health, recreation and amenities. Ogwr Borough Council subsequently changed its name to Bridgend Borough Council shortly before the next local government reorganisation in 1996, when it became part of the unitary authority of Bridgend County Borough Council.
