Administrative/Biographical history: The chainmakers Brown Lenox re-located from Millwall (Middlesex) to Ynysangharad, Pontypridd (Glamorgan), in 1816. The firm was attracted to the site as it combined easy access to a ready supply of Merthyr pig iron obtained via the Glamorganshire Canal, and an abundant supply of locally-produced coal. During the course of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, Brown Lenox built up an international reputation as a leading chain and anchor manufacturer. The firm also produced cables for a number of pioneering bridge designs, including the Menai suspension bridge. In 2000 the site at Ynysangharad was closed.
