CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Monmouthshire Record Office was founded in 1938 to preserve the records of Monmouthshire County Council and other records relating to the area. Material deposited with the record office that related to Glamorgan was periodically transferred to the Glamorgan Record Office. In 1974, Monmouthshire County Council was replaced by Gwent County Council, and the Record Office changed its name accordingly. Although the county of Gwent was abolished in 1996, Gwent Record Office has continued as a joint service to its successor bodies, Torfaen, Monmouthshire, Newport, Blaenau Gwent and Caerphilly (part).
