Administrative/Biographical history: The Rev. Father J. M. Cronin was one of six Roman Catholic priests serving the parish of St Peter's, Cardiff, Glamorgan, in 1931; St Peter's had been established as a mission by the Rosminians (Institute of Charity) in the 1850s. He was interested in the Catholic history of Wales, and researched the Black Friars, recusants, the Merthyr Tydfil, Cardiff and Swansea missions of 1859, and Cardiff churches.
