Administrative/Biographical history: Stephen Owen Davies (1886-1972) was born at Abercwmboi, Aberdare, Glamorgan. At the age of twelve he began work at Cwmpennar pit. In 1913, he obtained a BA in the Social Sciences from the University College, Cardiff, before becoming an agent of the South Wales Miners Federation for Dowlais in 1918. In 1924, he was elected as a member of the executive of the Miners Federation of Great Britain and later that year he became the vice-president, a position he held until 1933. In 1934, he became the MP for Merthyr Tydfil, standing as a member of the Labour Party. The South Wales Miners' Federation was a mineworkers union formed in 1898. In 1945 it became the South Wales region of the NUM.
