Administrative/Biographical history: In 1837, Thomas Wayne and the David family formed a company and sank a pit on the family's land at Abernant-y-groes, Cwmbach, locating a rich four-foot seam of anthracite coal. In effect, this marked the beginning of the anthracite and steam coal industry in the Cynon valley.
