Administrative/Biographical history: Friendly societies comprised groups of working people who contributed to a mutual fund which provide assistance to its members in times of need. Unlike other friendly societies, the Independent Order of Rechabites promoted abstinence among its members. The name Rechabites derives from the biblical tribe who were 'commanded to drink no wine' by their leader. The Order was made up of branches known as Tents, of which one was active in Penygarn, 1920-1959.
