Administrative/Biographical history: When the third marquess of Bute celebrated his silver wedding in 1897 he presented the City of Cardiff with a gift of £1,000, the interest from which was to provide an annual dowry, and a bible to a `needy bride'. The first award was made in 1899. Bessie (1886-1966) and Arthur Jones (1886-1964), married in 1913, were the only recipients of the Bute Dowry to celebrate their 50th anniversary.
