Administrative/Biographical history: The Independent Order of Oddfellows is a friendly society. Its purpose is to protect and support its members in times of need. The `Manchester Unity' Oddfellows had originally been a part of the United Order of Oddfellows before breaking away in 1810 to form their own independent lodge. Gradually the Manchester Unity Oddfellows gathered adherents throughout the country, and in 1859, Loyal Lady Clive Lodge, No 4787, was established in Penarth, Glamorgan. In 1989, the Penarth lodge was finally merged with a Cardiff lodge due to its declining membership.
