Administrative/Biographical history: Wesleyan Methodism made a relatively late appearance in the Cynon valley and was weaker than most other Nonconformist churches there, possessing only one chapel - at Hirwaun, co. Brecon - in 1837 but it had expanded to fourteen causes by 1897, six of them English.
