Administrative/Biographical history: Maesteg General Hospital opened during the First World War with the purpose of accommodating convalescent wounded servicemen. After the war it continued as a general hospital and maternity home. It was funded by local subscriptions, in particular by deductions taken from the wages of local mineworkers. The National Health Service took over the running of the hospital in 1948.
