Administrative/Biographical history: Treherbert Hospital, Rhondda was a small voluntary hospital established by grants from the Miners' Welfare Fund and by public subscription. A public meeting in 1922 called by the Bute Lodge led to the formation of a committee composed of representatives of various collieries which established a scheme for the creation of a hospital. A site was purchased in 1924 and the hospital officially opened in 1927. The hospital was used during the 1970s mainly by general practitioners with a small operating theatre for minor gynaecology operations, and also pre-convalescent cases and accommodation for long-stay patients and terminally ill from upper Rhondda. A cancer unit was opened in 1976. The hospital closed in 1999 and in-patient care and physiotherapy transferred to Ysbyty George Thomas. The building was largely destroyed by fire soon after closure.
