Administrative/Biographical history: Cardiff City Mental Hospital was opened in 1908 by Cardiff County Borough Council with the aim of filling the gap in the existing provision for the care of the mentally ill. Patients from Cardiff had previously relied upon private institutions, the Glamorgan County Lunatic Asylum (which opened in 1864, taking a quota of Cardiff patients), the Cardiff workhouse and the observation wards at City Lodge (later St David's) Hospital, Cardiff. The site chosen was the Velindre (Felindre) estate, Whitchurch, about three miles from the centre of the city and outside the county borough boundaries until 1996. In 1948 the hospital was re-named Whitchurch Hospital and was placed in the care of the Whitchurch and Ely Hospital Management Committee. From 1974 Whitchurch Hospital became the centre of the psychiatric services of South Glamorgan Health Authority. Whitchurch Hospital was used as the site of the Welsh Metropolitan War Hospital 1915-1919 and as the Whitchurch Emergency Hospital, Whitchurch, 1940-1945.
