Before 1878, responsibility for running schools in the Rhondda lay solely with voluntary agencies until the Rhondda (Ystradyfodwg) School Board was set up to take over the running of a number of the colliery schools. After the Education Act 1902, responsibility for elementary education passed to the Local Education Authorities within county councils and county boroughs.
