Administrative/Biographical history: The Welsh College of Music and Drama was established in 1971 under the administration of Cardiff County Borough Council but under its instrument of government, it included from its inception representatives of national bodies such as the National Youth Orchestra of Wales, the Welsh Theatre Co., BBC Wales, and various theatre bodies, guilds and prominent actors. Management of the college passed in 1974 from Cardiff County Borough to South Glamorgan County Council.

Archival history: The papers form a continuous body and no attempt has been made to divide them to reflect the change of local authority management in 1974. The papers were intended for inspection by the Director of Education but were placed in the departmental library for at least a part of their administrative life.
