Administrative/Biographical history: General Registration of shipping over 15 tons was introduced by an Act of 1786, although records for the Port of Cardiff date only from 1824.
Scope and content/abstract: Shipping registers give the official number, name and port of registry of each vessel and also details of its construction and ownership. Ship registration papers for the Port of Cardiff give registration details for ships recorded in the shipping registers. Each file contains correspondence and forms relating to registration of the ships. Transaction registers record changes in ownership
