CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The school was opened in January 1895 in the Parade, Cardiff, under the terms of the Welsh Intermediate Education Act 1889, hence its initial name of the Cardiff Intermediate School for Girls, which was changed in 1911 to City of Cardiff High School for Girls. From 1905 secondary school education in Cardiff was largely provided through a system of Municipal Secondary Schools (Howard Gardens established 1885, Canton from 1907 and Cathays) organised under the Education Act of 1902 and the high schools for boys and girls in Cardiff. Both Cardiff High Schools were amalgamated in 1970 with Ty Celyn Secondary school in Llandennis Road to from Cardiff High School as a new comprehensive.
