CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: Iorwerth Howells was born in Cardiff in 1907 and was brought up in Llandaff North. Mr Howells was educated at Penarth County School and Cardiff University, and also studied for an external qualification from London University. He became a teacher, and taught at Canton High School for Boys in Cardiff, where he also played the organ at concerts. During the early 1940s, he left Canton, and became Warden of the Educational Settlement at Pontypridd. Finally, in 1946, he moved to Carmarthen as Assistant Director of Education, subsequently becoming Director, where he remained until his retirement in 1972. Mr Howells married Megan Glenys Jordan in 1937, and together they had two children, Cenydd and Susan. He died, aged 92, during 1999. Mr HowellsTM sister, Margaret Jane, also became a teacher, and taught at Birchgrove Primary School. Like her brother, she was active in the ARP during the Second World War. She continued to live at the family home until poor health resulted in hospitalisation during the 1990s. Their father, Iorwerth John Howells, worked for the Taff Vale Railway Company in its Cardiff office, and his mother, Eleanor, was a pupil teacher. The family spoke Welsh at home. They were deeply involved with the Tabernacle Presbyterian Chapel in Whitchurch, where Mr Howells and his parents were all made elders during 1937. The family were also active with the chapelTMs Sunday School, Band of Hope, and educational, cultural and musical activities.
