Administrative/Biographical history: The association was established for the benefit of former crewmen and officers of HMS Cardiff, the second of two ships bearing this name. The first HMS Cardiff was commissioned in 1917 and laid up in 1946. The second HMS Cardiff was commissioned in 1979 and its appearance prompted Frank Lintern, a former Chief Petty Officer with the first HMS Cardiff, in conjunction with Vice Admiral Sir Barry Wilson, KCB, to establish the association. This was made up of former naval servicemen and a number of their wives and numbered in total approximately 80 members. Lintern served as Secretary of the HMS Cardiff Association and the records include a large number of his personal photographs and memorabilia. The falling number in membership led to the transfer in 2003 to supervision by the Royal Naval Association, Cardiff. The transfer is likely to be temporary.
