Administrative/Biographical history: The late Dillwyn Lewis was the headmaster of Maesybryn Primary School, Llantwit Fardre. In 1981, he published Under the Parish Lantern: Llanilltud Faerdref Parish in Pictures (Risca: Starling Press, 1981). A donation resulting from the sale of this book was transferred into a charitable bond administered by the former Mid Glamorgan County Council, and now by Rhondda Cynon Taf County Borough Council, in favour of three local schools: Bryncelynnog Comprehensive School, Beddau; Maesybryn Primary School, Llantwit Fardre, and Gwauncelyn Primary School, Tonteg. The charity states that interest from this bond is to be paid to these schools and used as a book prize donated to the most outstanding pupil of the year. This prize is known as the 'Under the Parish Lantern Award'.
Scope and content/abstract: The archive comprises photographs collected by Dillwyn Lewis for inclusion in his publication, Under the Parish Lantern. They include photographs, with annotations, of places within, and events held in the parish of Llantwit Fardre, including the towns and villages of Church Village, Tonteg, Llantwit Fardre, Efail Isaf, Treforest and Creigiau.
