CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Taff vale Railway Co was established in 1835 with the intention of establishing a railway between ironworks at Merthyr Tydfil and the growing number of coal mines in the industrial valleys in the areas above Taffs Well. Congestion, delay and related financial costs in moving iron products and coal on the Glamorganshire Canal to the Cardiff Docks was restricting growth of both industries. The railway was formerly opened in 1841 connecting Merthyr Tydfil and several side valleys to the west Bute Dock, cardiff and Great Western Railway, and subsequently extended its network up the Rhondda valleys. The Railway became part of British railways in 1947.
