CONTEXT

Administrative/Biographical history: The Whitney family of John Whitney and Hannah (née Davies). These papers relate to the legal and personal affairs of John Whitney and of his descendants. John Whitney was an apothecary in Swansea. He was admitted as Burgess of Swansea in 1746 and died around 1756. He married Hannah Davies (bur. 1780) and the collection also includes papers relating to her brothers Lewis, Owen and Thomas and Thomas' wife Martha. Other papers relate to the children of John and Hannah, namely Ann (baptised 1728, buried 1793), Eleanor (baptised 1737, married David Hopkin in 1773) and Martha (baptised 1741, buried1820). There were also three sons Thomas, Walter and William who all appear to have died at a young age.

Archival history:

Immediate source of acquisition: The records were originally held at The Royal Institution of South Wales, Swansea. From 1966 onwards the records were moved to the library in the University College, Swansea in consignments. They were transferred to West Glamorgan Archive Service in the Spring of 2004.
